Looking in the left rear wheel well and see this patch. Does not look like it belongs there.

Absolutely incorrect for any Euro-280 or other rest-of-the-world-280. :-X

But correct for a US-version 280 from model year 1969 (??) onwards. ??? 8)
The lines from the expansion tank (running between the fuel fumes overflow tank and the crankcase) are protected by this shield.

It would be painted the color of the car, just as the wheel wells.

I've seen them painted and then I've seen them black. Looks like they're installed after the car is painted.

Car color with yellow chromate screws?There is no overspray on the plastic hoses that go under the cover I would assume it is installed later.  Surprised it isn’t stamped with the chassis number.
