Title: DB158 - Weissgrau
Post by: ctaylor738 on August 15, 2018, 21:14:51
Working on a 280SL, including replacing the beat-up wheel covers with some better ones that needed painting.  I ordered a spray can of  DB158 from Paintscratch.  The color match was awful - it looked more like Light Ivory.  The automotive paint stores could only provide two- or three-stage paint at a cost of over $100 and they warned against using anything other than a HVLP gun to spray it.  None of the Krylon or Rustoleum colors worked.

So I tried the regular Sherwin Williams store and bought a quart of their enamel in "Useful Gray" for $24.  I cut it with 25% mineral spirits and put it on with a Preval sprayer after a coat of self-etching primer.  I'm happy with the color match and the paint is very forgiving and super easy to apply.

The Sherwin Williams store had a really good good selection of non-metallic colors - there must be at least 25 shades of light gray.

I wouldn't try painting the body panels with this paint, but for engine compartment, wheel covers or dash it would work well.

Cheers,

CT
