Title: Correct Head Gasket
Post by: MikeSimon on August 06, 2018, 18:03:11: I did a search here but could not find an answer, so, please forgive me if this has been discussed somewhere before...
I am buying parts on-line to put my engine back together after I took the head off.
I bought a gasket set which includes a head gasket as shown in the top picture.
It is different from the gasket I took off which looks like the one in the bottom picture.If I use the one that is supposedly correct, there are a couple of small holes that are not sealed and whatever flows through there would leak into the combustion chamber.
Any words of wisdom?

From what I get after reading all this for 30 minutes, I have a late 280SL head (which I knew, because of the 22774 serial number of the car).
That means the head casting should be 130 016 1101 and the gasket should be 130 016 5620 "oval", correct?

Does that mean, the gasket I bought was a "square" gasket?

Post by: MikeSimon on August 07, 2018, 15:13:54: Once again I searched and searched.. and cannot find a source for the correct head gasket. I know, I can always order it from the local MB dealer...any alternatives (preferably cheaper.. ;D)

I would not spend 5 seconds on thinking where to buy (right or wrong, I am not experienced enough to pick a brand for a good gasket). This is not the part I would save money on, unless I knew the brand that is same or better quality vs. offered by MB from someone experienced.

But availability seems to be an issue. I do not see late 280SL gaskets available at MB! Perhaps they hide behind some repair set...

And yes, hardly anybody sells a separate head gasket. They all come in sets

I found the access to K&K and ordered an upper gasket set. Supposedly the correct one.
Really surprising thing is, that it was listed at $222.- on the site and I got an invoice for $150.-. Good form, K&K, good form!

It is possible they no longer stock the stock bore or first oversize gasket. I can't imagine 1mm of gasket hole diameter increase would effect compression or sealing measurably.

Not sure if it helps, but to be more systematic and for Mike to identify what he bought:

A1300165020 - cylinder head gasket, replaced by
A1300165620 - cylinder head gasket As of engine.... (late, oval)

A1300164920 - cylinder head gasket, replaced by
A1300165520 - cylinder head gasket Standard And Up To Repair Size I As of engine.... (same as above)

For gasket kits:
A1300100480 replaced by
A1300103521 - head gasket kit As of....(a bit earlier engine numbers than for head gasket) This is the Pelican link and Shvegel's picture.

I think all of the above are oval.

If you bought one of these sets: A1300100280 replaced by A1300103321 you may be back in square gaskets sets again...
