Title: Re-fastening sill trim
Post by: ctaylor738 on June 23, 2018, 14:00:49
I'm freshening up a 280SL, recently purchased by a fussy new owner.  It arrived missing its outer sill trim, so I ordered the the pieces from SLS.  They are repros, but decent.  And the holes line up.  The problem is that the holes in sill are all too big for the correct screws.  Has anyone come up with a good way to deal with this?  I have thought about hooking a piece of wire in the hole, or maybe a rivet and drilling out the center.

Thanks,

CT

You can use small countersunk m3 screws with a nut inside the door.

Maybe this product will help.  They sell it at home depot also.  Cut,  shape,  spindle,  make flange and stuff in hole. The product grips hole and the screw grips to it.

I have used it many times with great success.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Mr. Grip did not work very well.  I am sure it would work for a large hole, but these holes were too small to get a workable piece into.  BUT, the guy at the hardware store suggested "Screw-It Again." It's a threaded plastic anchor with a very small tip.  You screw it into the hole and break it off to size.  I used it on two holes securing the grille shell that had badly enlarged holes, and on the seven holes for the sill trim.  In both cases I was able to use the correct screws.  I don't want to go hyperbolic, but this is a really good solution, needed for a long time, especially for the door trim screws.

Cheers,

CT
