Title: Missing and smoking
Post by: Richard on June 01, 2018, 08:59:56
I’m new to the group so thanks for allowing me to join. Can anyone help please

My 1966 230 Auto Pagoda has suffered an engine fault where it started expelling dark smoke from the exhausts, lost power and generally sounded rough. I turned it off as soon as I could. It was smelling of fuel over the last few months but I put that down to its age.

Can anyone provide any ideas to what could be wrong please?

Also do you have any contacts in the UK for parts and part brochures?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello Richard,
First check all your fluids to see if you have any unusual consumption. Sounds like you have a sudden rich running situation. It might be something stuck on the fuel injection. Possibly the cold starting valve on the intake manifold could be stuck open? Many other possibilities, but very black smoke is most often excessive fuel. White smoke could be coolant, or auto transmission fluid. Bluish smoke could be oil.  Remove your spark plugs and look at them for clues.

My first check would be oil level in the MFI pump.

This may not apply but the last time I was involved in a '' missing and smoking '' situation it was in grade 12 and I was sent home from school for a few days. ;)

Pull spark plugs and see if one or all are fouled with oil or unburned fuel.
