With a small chrome tip on the end. A bit concave I think.

I would think it would be black as the later 113 models eliminated many of the chrome parts found on the earlier models.

I have often wondered why the odometer numbers are of different sizes. Could someone please elaborate on this?

Yeah, those odometer "6's" are definately weird. Seems to be consistent, however.

Douglas -- That is a good photo of the black plastic knob on the speedometer. I broke mine several years ago, and its been missing ever since.
Do you, or anyone else, know where to get a replacement black knob of the type you've captured in his photo?
I've tried ordering from MB, but received some goofy looking metal (dull aluminium or some such) knob with threads, which didn't fit/work at all.
Here's an additional / different question: Over time the center gauge cluster develops a film inside the glass. Any experience out there about this? What causes this filming? Is there anyway to stop it?
I find that filmy/greasy look inside the instrument cluster glass very distracting.

Try either Palo Alto Speedometer or North Hollywood Speedometer. I would think they would have the knob on hand.

TR,
There are a number of posts on the site about how to clean the glass of the center cluster, and tach, and speedo. It does not appear to be a terribly difficult job (other than taking the darn things out of the dash) and being very careful with the chrome ring.
Could there be a leak in the oil line or thermometer line? The oil line is a direct connect, and some residue might be showing up on the inside.

Gents -- I just got off the phone with Palo Alto Speedo. Awfully nice folks. I was told they have none of those plastic knobs and don't have a source either. Sounds like a full-on search would be required, which they said they could do.
Also, I asked about the greasey film buildup inside the center cluster. I was told this is a standard thing. They see it all the time and get about 2 W113s a month in because of it...said it was not a big deal to pop off the chrome bezel and carefully remove the glass for cleaning. I've never tried it though.
