Hello all,
Has anyone fitted a fan shroud to a 230SL
I havn't seen one for a 230 as an original part in any parts suppliers stock list and not shown in my 1963 Catalogue "A" Parts.
A collegue has one on a 280 SL RHD . SLS parts show this as a USA part.
Does the 280 shroud fit a 230, or are fan sizes an issue.
Thanks,
Mike H.

Hi Mike,
I believe the 230SL did not have a shroud. I have owned two, both without. However my 280SL had one.

There was a 230SL fan shroud available because I have a NOS here.

OK Dan,
I'm tying to heat proof my engine from the Australian heat and hanging in traffic. Not a problem where you are.
Is the shroud you have for sale, and will it fit a 64 model ? Mine's RHD.
Thanks,
Mike H.

I would imagine it would fit any 230SL engine. I guess I could sell it.

Mike,
Are you having overheating problems with your 230sl? Do you have an air-conditioner fitted. The over heating may be a symptom of some other problem going on. I have never had a heating problem with mine and have used it on many days where the temperatures were well up into the high 30’s and even into 40c.
I had air-conditioning but removed it as I don't think they are good for the 230 motor.

Hi Garry,
I'm in the restoration process and have been for the last 20 years, never driven the car on the open road.
So I'm working on anecdotal stories of overheating in traffic, and that the auto box does not have a secondary cooler with the radiator.
The shroud will definitely concentrate air to the radiator, so a positive result to lower the overheating prospects.
No airconditioner.
I'm looking for reliability as the car will be as new and used regularly, and for long distance use, so don't need overheating issues in remote places.
The car is faithfull to factory build, but I see this addition as insurance.
Cheers,
Mike
