Title: 230 SL Engine Number Question
Post by: rjmarco on March 11, 2018, 00:00:59
I have the engine on my 230 SL out for overhaul.  I'n naturally interested in whether my engine is original or not.

The engine number is shown in the attached photo along with the nameplate.  There is a question about whether this is the original engine since the number/lettering looks different than what's normally seen.  I also noticed that the nameplate has one screw rather than being riveted on both ends.  Would this also suggest this was a replacement motor rather than the original?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Regards,

Rich

Have you got the data card for your car? That is the arbiter, as the engine number is listed on the card.

Hi, Jonny.

Thanks for the prompt reply.  Yes, I do have the data card and the numbers do match.  The question really is whether this was a replacement engine that was re-stamped.
