My '70 280SL has started to leak on the car below (Its on a lift), and I was trying to determine where its coming from.
If I post pics, can someone give me an educated guess as to the probable source of the leaks (2) One in front, one to the rear.

The one in the rear is most likely the diff pinion seal. I see you have the optional underbody skid/protection plate on the diff. Tou will likely need to remove it to get a better look at things

Thanks, who do you think is one of the better mechanic's in San Diego for SL's? The only guy that w I know are the guys at German Motors in Pacific Beach.

Rare option. We would like pictures of the underside of your SL for our web Forum, if you would be so kind (purpose of documentation).

Bob Gunthorp's shop "Onager" in Chula Vista is the only one I have really done any business with. https://www.onagercorporation.com/ Bit of a drive if you live in north county. There are a few in north county. Maybe Alfred Or Jon can chime in here.
-
I will contact ONAGER in Chula Vista, not that far from my office, and see what he says.
As for the skid pan, I think that my car was originally sent to S. Africa ?? That may be why it had the skid plates installed.
I will get pictures and forward them for the Web Forum, while the car is up on lift.

If you have a paint code plate that is readable you can determine where your car was originally ordered/sent. Take a look at Technical Manual - you will see which one is the code plate (I am placing mine on the picture) and how to decode it. You will also have a list of factory options stamped on that plate.
Options are the 3 digit numbers in the first line. Country/dealer code is the number after VIN digits in the 3rd line.It is all described in the Tech Manual.
If your car was meant and built for South Africa (but someone might have ordered it and picked from another country, or it could be diplomatic sales car!) then in the third line you should have 113044 then 12 (automatic) then 6 (Africa). I am not sure if you have to have 2 more digits on location in Africa, you may have those on Datacard. You see my plate just says 2 for Germany then on Datacard I have 14, which is Dortmund. Yours may say 6 for Africa (if order was placed there, not somewhere else for car to be taken there).
The undershields option code is 481 as per Technical Manual. May appear in line 1 on this plate.
-
Another option in North County, is Silver Star Mercedes in Escondido. Bob's is a good place too.
-
Yes, My paint code plate is : 113044 12 6
So it was a South African car, which makes sense with the factory skid plates on it.
-
Ok, so it is!
If you have the Datacard you can check where in SA your car was delivered. If you do not have the Datacard, you can get it from the Classic Centre upon showing proof of ownership.
Does it have 481 in the first line? It does not have to - the original skid plates could have been added by a dealer.
-
the First line is:
257 426 503 516 531
-
From the tech manual:
257 - no listing (I am traveling, and do not have access to my more complete list)
426 - Combo of auto transmission and power steering
503 - Outside mirror left side
516 - Becker GP radio
531 - Auto antenna
-
257- radio HIline I have on some lists, but not sure if this could be he case for W113.

Does anyone else have any experienece with ONAGER in San Diego ?
