Title: foam pads for top of fuel tank

Can anyone point me in the right direction for obtaining the foam pad material that was used between the fuel tank and trunk floor?
I had the tank cleaned and powder coated and getting ready to install. The existing pads were old and brittle and were lost when the tank was sandblasted.
I was thinking of visiting a textile store where they sell foam for furniture etc. but would like to obtain the most correct type of material
Thanks for you help.
I'm in the San Diego area BTW.

Post by: doitwright on February 27, 2018, 14:52:28: When I removed mine they were more like a layered asphalt roofing material. Definitely not foam. Foam will hold moisture and you do not want a material that will hold moisture.

At a minimum of 400*F curing temp for powder coating, the plastic flower pot probably looks like the witch in the Wizard of Oz when she was melting. I powder coat most everything I can, but not that part. Might give the innards a really good inspection and compare to the pictures of the flower pot on this site.

FYI, I bought some of that asphalt/tar material from the Classic Center. I believe it was around 3/8" thick. There are many others who carry it.

Post by: wwheeler on February 28, 2018, 04:54:23: I hope you dodged a bullet on the flower pot! It actually raises a good point about restoring parts whether it is plating or powder coating. Hard to know about all of the hidden pieces inside these complicated German engineered parts. Really have to do some home work before you pull the trigger.

RELIEF... Fortunately the flower pot is intact. Very humbling...lesson learned. Thank you for the feedback.
Working on getting the felt/asphalt pads now.

Post by: Benz Dr. on February 28, 2018, 16:18:27: I had a car show up where all of the front suspension was powder coated - I mean everything. All of the threaded fittings had to be cleaned before anything would fit together. Lots of extra work.....what a mess!
