Title: I see the MB in-line 6 cyl engines are back
Post by: zak on January 22, 2018, 23:12:47
I was reading that MB's new CLS 450 has a straight 6 engine. It's coupled with a 21 hp electric 48 volt motor that also serves as the starter, alternator and drives the water pump if I remember correctly. The set up sounds interesting.

Glad to see. The heritage of the MB straight 6 is long. What from the Gullwings up to Pagodas and M-110 engines. Not to mention the great diesel engines. I just love opening the hood on my 250 SL to look at that engine.
When did MB first switch to the V-6 setup? I think diesel was the 2007 CDI. Not sure about the gassers, maybe with the advent of the 350 engine or earlier.

Was the switch to the V-6 engine just to make a shorter hood/engine compartment ?   Or were there other factors involved. The balance shaft requirements are certainly a penalty for the V setup.

According to your friend and mine, Wikipedia,
The inline 6 (petrol) dates from 1924
The V6 from 1997
