Title: Gas Cap Venting
Post by: Richard Madison on April 30, 2003, 07:07:03
About to order an MB locking gas cap (finally)...

For a '71 280SL with a fume tank in the trunk I believe that Unvented ("ohne beluftung") is the correct cap BUT

-one of the lines on my fume tank (going into the trunk floor) has never been connected (yet there is no smell of gas in the trunk)...

-the cap I'm replacing is an after-market locking cap marked "Vented, Anti-Surge" With this vented cap, I never get splashback or sucking even in hot weather.

Should my new MB cap be Vented like the one I have now even tho it might not be "correct"?

I'm pretty sure that you should get the unvented type. The fact that this one specific line (out of three in total) going into the floor is not connected, does not lead to problems because, if I understand correctly, it only functions as a sort of "emergency-overflow-of-last-resort" in case the overflow tank is not large enough. I may be wrong on this though. You may want to get the line going through the floor, with the funnel-shaped end, once you are at it. Replacing the rubber hoses/clamps for the three lines is also a good idea if it has not been done in recent history.

Richard,

Ditto what Cees says-you need the un vented.

I purchased mine from Tom Hanson, who equipped with my lock number from the data card was able to get me a gas cap keyed for my car.  So I have one key for all locks.

Best,

Tom
