Hi experts,
Anyone knows where on this world to buy fenders with original notches and why all after market fender notches it doesn’t look like the original , is it that difficult to copy or what ?
-
The notches were not pressed into the fenders but added as a lead wipe and file prior to painting and that is why there is some variation in the notches you see.
When new fenders is put on as a result of an accident the notches were often not put indue to lack of knowledge by repairer and again you will often see a car that had no notches due to fender replacement and the repairer not fully understanding that the notch was added.
-
Also one can add that when a car is re-painted the notches often disappear and are filled with paint. My car was re-painted in 1992 and now the car has no notches ... ;) mind you it does not break my heart :)

It is fairy common for them to get sanded off during a repaint. The man who did the metalwork on my car is a bit obsessive so he formed the notches in the sheet metal rather than in the filler.

Hi all ,
My white 1969 pagoda comes with original notches and I’m planning to change the colour to silver , is there anyway to protect the notches from the deforming ? as I’m very keen about the .

Taleb,
IMHO, simply tell the bodyman/woman about the importance of the notches, take lots of pictures, and ask him/her to preserve them. Any competent metal and paint worker will be able to preserve or re-create them once they understand they are important.
Good luck
