Title: Disconnected wire - where does it go?
Post by: SWMHancock on October 19, 2017, 00:22:16
Friends,

My son & I have been on a mission, cleaning up the engine compartment of my '68 280 SL.  After a thorough detail, she looks so much better and she must feel better.  However, in the process, I found a wire that was not connected.

I believe it has been disconnected for a number of years.  It runs in a wiring bundle along the driver side wall from the firewall to just in front of the relay bench.  It then separates into a 4wire bundle an a single wire.  This is the loose wire in question.  They all turn toward the motor, through a round rubber grommeted holder.  After that the 4 wire ground disappears along the engine, turns toward the firewall and reappears, with only one of those wires connected to 1 of 2 components (I do not know what the component is).  The loose wire is just that, loose.

Does anyone know what this wire is and where it goes?

I have attached a few pictures to hopefully help in the discussion.

- Picture 1 shows the clean engine compartment, and the wire bundle at the bottom center.
- Picture 2 shows the loose wire in one hand displaying the type of connector and the finger is pointing to the 4 wire bundle.
- Picture 3 is an attempt to show the components to which one of the wires is currently connected.  They are the 2 that are just under the rubber hose with the letters I/68 on it.  There are 2 screws on the ends with a plastic bar between them.

Thanks a ton, in advance,
Steve

It's hard to tell from the pictures so far.  It looks like your FIP has two solenoids from the last picture.  There should be a wire going to each solenoid.  Are both of your solenoids connected currently?

I'm not sure.  I will check and report back.
I assume by FIP you mean Fuel Injection Pump.  Yes?

Thanks!

Yes, FIP = fuel injection pump.
There might be two solenoids attached to the rear (towards rear of vehicle) of the FIP. (There will either be one or two. If two, they are mounted one over the other both connected to the rear of the FIP.)
I would think that one of the more experienced guys will recognize the connector and be able to narrow it down too.
Nice clean up. I like the original Metzler hose.  ;D
Good luck.
