Title: Oil Dipstick
Post by: RPSchuetz on October 09, 2017, 01:37:14
Curious about a couple things-

Just noticed that my '69 280SL's dipstick has "230/250/67" stamped on it. Any idea if that's original to the '69 model or whether perhaps it got switched out over the years?

Also, does anyone know the quantity of measured oil between the minimum and maximum marks? Definitely more than a quart, perhaps a litre?

I would think that it's a liter.

Post a picture of the entire dipstick and measure the length of the dipstick tube as best you can from the engine up.  I know there are 3 different styles and they need to be used with different dipstick tube lengths.  They are separated by the handle style as some are longer than others.

You made me look..both my 1967 250 SL and 280 SL (Sept 69 build) have the oil dipstick markings as you list.

It is 2 quarts between the marks for the oil.  One pint between the marks for the automatic transmission.

Joe, sorry, please forgive me my ignorance - do you mean a quarter of the US gallon by a "quart"?

I am just trying to refer to what Dan said about a liter between the marks.

When you say two quarts, given that the US gallon is 3.785 liters, 2 quarts would be 1.89 liters - quite a lot...
( this is (3.785 : 4) x 2 = 1.89 )

Total oil capacity is 6 liters if I remember correctly (with the filter).

Am I correct in converting the US volume units?

Mine is definitely the middle version - thanks for the link!

Mine is the latest version. It appears my top loop of the dipstick was orange. Does anyone know what orange paint should be used to make it original again?

Interesting, I always assumed it as 2 US quarts, but 2 liters makes more sense. The difference is not critical I am sure. For oil totals consider the oil cooler. Also if it has a new ribbed sub-pan the capacity is increased an additional 1/2 quart.
