Title: Spare tire/wheel question
Post by: vande17941 on August 26, 2017, 02:21:59
I have searched and searched and can't find the answer. Was the spare wheel on the late 230sl painted to match the other wheels or was it painted primer Grey, excetera?

Hello Vande,

That's not that difficult.
All 230/250 and early 280 SL's rims were only primed - in grey. Inside and out. 8)

The outside (road side) was additionally sprayed in body color but the inside (hub side) was not.  :o
Thus, there is no body color visible on the inside,
other than some spay coming through the slotted holes of the rim. 8)

The spare wheel looks exactly the same as the other four ones.

Here is a pic of an untouched car - a 230 (not mine).

 ;)

That´s correct. However, sometime during 1967 (250SL production) the rim manufacturers switched over, they began deliver all satin black rims to M-B.
This was continued to end of production (1971). Rims were of the same pressing that had three "noses" for the dog dish type center cap, part No 108 400 0002.
