Title: Screw Type for Headlight Bezel
Post by: RobSirg on July 22, 2017, 11:01:44
Guys,

I'm trying to confirm the screw type used to fix the chrome headlight bezel to the car body. It's the single screw at the bottom (centre) of the chrome ring. N.B: This is for a RHD 280SL.

Attached is what I found on my car. Do these this look correct?

Regards,

No, not even close...
These are M4 screws; from factory they were nice chromed special type hardware. Countersunk with cross head. Picture "047" attached. The plastic washer is for retaining the screw onto the headlight door (bezel).

You can use a normal M4 countersunk screw.

As for the M4 screws that hold the alloy frame for the headlights to the pot in the fender, those screws are a special type as well. The head is a smaller diameter than normal pan head M4 screws, in order to clear the glass headlight lens. I have made my own screws by turning down the head diameter. See attached picture. Left to right:  M4 screw as bought, the turned down self made version and an original factory screw.

I think those frame to body screws are stainless steel.

Thanks Dan,

Always has me baffled why they have stainless fixings on Chrome trims ( chrome looks better of course). I guess it is because the Chrome can strip after frequent use?

Of course l couldn't find anyone who sells them. MB centre sells them only with the Bezel - which makes it a very expensive screw.

Hopefully someone is enterprising enough to make them up for retail.

Here is a German vendor, DIN 966 is a useful type for the bezel
