In "Original Mercedes SL", Laurence Meredith says (speaking of the pagodas), " both lids (the hood and trunk - or bonnet and boot if you prefer) should be painted body colour on their undersides".
My 280 and another 280 which I believe is totally original have the underside of the trunk lid painted a flat, grayish black. Is Meredith wrong? What do thse of you with documented original cars have?

Mr. Meredith does make some mistakes. Certainly for a 1969, of which I am most familiar, the underside of the bonnet/hood is body color, which matches the engine bay. The underside of the trunk lid/boot is this flat black-gray color, which matches the rest of the trunk/boot interior. If you are just questioning this for informational purposes, there you have it. If you are refinishing, there are some other posts on the subject that you can search and you can get the Glasurit paint number for this black-gray color.

Mr. Meredith did make a foopa in saying the undise of the boot is painted body color. It is a satin black like the rest of the trunk. The underside of the hood is painted body color and if orginal some times have factory paint runs . There is also a three ditit serial number at the left edge of the hood the are the last numbers of your vin. This will tell you you have an orginal unreplaced hood.

The colour code for trunk and
also trunk lid inside is "164".
The German name of the colour is
"Tiefdunkelgrau". (Dull !)
For orders You have to add a "7"
So the correct number is 7164.
Hope this will help You...
Have a nice day !
Tom :-)

This is false. Stamped is last part of Aufbau No (body No), has nothing to do with the VIN

For example, my VIN ends in -018381 and my Aufbau No, matching on all proper components, is 486.
