Title: Weight of Pagoda W113 roof?
Post by: ohoraherecaptain on June 27, 2017, 14:27:52
Hi Guys.
Any of you ever have an issue with lifting your hard top off your 230s/50s/80s ??? As you will know there a pretty heavy piece of kit, and I mentioned them previously on this forum. I have looked at many examples but wonder if the straps that were designed for the 70s models will carry the heavier 60s' HT?
Any thought on this would be much appreciated.

Here's an example of the belts I referred to in my previous post.

The top weighs about 100 pounds. I can't imagine that those straps can't handle that.
But, you could/should ask the people that designed or are selling to actually know for a fact.
Also, you didn't ask, but I can tell you that many of us have damaged our cars using many different kinds of devices to lift the roof off of our cars. :o
So, it would be prudent to be very careful.
Of course, many others have not damage their cars too.

JOH, per the Technical Manual the roof weighs 49kg. However I would not use this system on my hard top.

IMHO you need something that has positive attachment to the top and which will easily carry the load.  Considering the damage that can be done to your hard top and your car if you drop the load, this is not the place to go for an over simplifed solution.  If you do a search on this sight you will find numerous devices developed by members that are reasonably inexpensive to build and which provide a safe way to lift your hard top.

John,

I believe the latter SL s had Aluminium Hard Tops, so may be lighter, and had less glass. Ours are  steel and do weigh 50 Kg.
I load tested my lifting kit using 30 full  "Coke" type 2 litre Bottles.

As others have said there is a multitude of information here, of various lifting designs.
Personally, I do not like the "Gutter Rail" type, so I use two  "L" type bars under the side windows, which I modified from a German Audi system..

Garry is the expert though !!!!!!

Happy lifting

Paul

Yes, got you, and that's why I'm looking into it.
Doubt if I might have company to assist me when in my garage - so need for assistance will be likely.
