I just finished up a post on addressing the vibration in my 250 SL (vibration since day one). The first step was replacing the driveshaft, and getting the proper alignment with the differential. This has been completed. While doing that, my mechanic discovered that the shift solenoid (that sits on the top of the auto transmission) was not functioning (I really don't push the car, so never paid much attention to the kick down, but it did do a might clunk when stopping). In any case, replacing the solenoid is a "tranny out of the car" operation. We were able to source a replacement solenoid locally. When he pulled out the transmission, he told me,"We really should look at the internals while the transmission is on the bench." Oh boy, what a saga that turned into.
There were all kinds of little sins discovered, with broken bolts, incorrect wires, etc. The biggest issue was with the torque converter. It was leaking a bit, and on its last legs. Then pulling the transmission apart we found worn out wet clutches and burned brake bands. My mechanic had the bands and clutches, but sourcing a replacement torque converter turned out to be the real problem. He was finally able to get one, again locally, after looking at six or so (both aluminum - early cars, and steel - later cars). The one he finally found and used, in steel, is now in the car.
I picked up the car on Friday, and oh my! It is like driving a new one! It shifts and stops as smooth and slick as can be. I expect that this transmission will outlast me!

Great news Jon. Enjoy. Now all you have to do is decide which SL to drive. A nice predicament for sure😄

Jon, Congrats on having the 250 back on the road. As I recall you had a new set of WW Maxxis tires waiting for installation on completion of the drive train work. Did you install yet and if so, how do you like them?

Just got the car back, so have not scheduled yet to get the Maxxis tires put on. That is on the to-do list for tomorrow. Hopefully I can get them on in the next week or so.
I will report back on that.

I took the 250 SL to the shop today and got the new tires mounted. Oh what a difference! They are the icing on the driveline cake. The car drives very nicely, smoothly and a bit more quietly.
These are the Maxxis 185/75 R 14, with the white walls. The most difficult thing about this part of the process was getting the blue protective coating off the whitewall!

Maxxis uses a particularly onerous blue! Greased lightning+SOS pad+elbow grease did the job!
Although a little "fatter", I went for the 195/75 for a closer match to original diameter. I agree the Maxxis drive great. Enjoy!
