Title: Drive shaft balance shop in central Florida
Post by: paults1 on April 29, 2017, 20:10:14
Anyone know of a shop in central Florida where I can have my 230SL driveshaft balanced? I have sent to several places and they don't have the correct machinery.  HELP please

Drive shaft balancing does require specialized equipment. I don't understand why you would send a driveshaft (or why they would take it) to someone not equipped to do the job.

I know of two shops that specialize in this, and are very familiar with MB drive shafts:

Driveline Service of Atlanta: http://www.drivelineserviceofatlanta.com
Driveline Service of Portland: http://www.driveshafts.com/products/Automotive-Parts/BMW-Mercedes-Benz

I am not affiliated with them, and they are unaffiliated with each other despite the similar names. "Portland" did my driveshaft twice, once during the restoration, a second time after a transmission issue. One of the things they do is (I'm sure anyone can do this as part of the service) is replace the fixed u-joints with those that can be greased.

As for "Central Florida" well, I too would check with Pierre. I'm pretty sure he sends them out somewhere...

I mentioned Pierre because I don't remember the name of the place that did mine.  I don't know where to get a ready made crate to ship off said driveshaft.

Gernold has a specific crates just for driveshafts and engines.

I don't know where to get a ready made crate to ship off said driveshaft.

When I had mine done first, from Portland, it was an exchange. I was on the phone with them probably less than 2 minutes for the order process, and you send the core back in the crate it came in. If you are the kind of person who absolutely has to have your original rebuilt instead of an exchange, (or if they don't have what you need in stock) I'm sure either one of those places would send you an empty crate. That's what Metric Motors did many years ago for my engine rebuild.

Anyone living near any kind of major airport has plenty of freight forwarders and thus, craters, nearby who can whip one up for you quickly.

An exchange never occurred to me since I don't have a stock driveshaft.  My transmission is a Getrag so a straight up swap was out of the question.
