Title: Late '67 250SL with 280 bits
Post by: Theclaw on April 22, 2017, 11:42:00
With regret I'm selling our 250SL and it's come up that our car has 280SL headlamps and wheel covers. We've owned the car since the 70's, have documentation from Aug 67 with no records of the PO swaping some of those bits out.

They made some changes with the late '67 models and I'm wondering if headlamps and wheel covers were part of that change.  I'd appreciate any input.

Thank you very much,
Jeff

Jeff,

Check out the latest editions of Pagoda Notes (available on the tech manual section) for a listing of the changes and when they occurred. All the big changes for the 250 SL came at VIN ending 2980, mid-year through 1967 to comply with the DOT mandates.

For your car the headlights should be "AC" you can see the letters molded into the plastic. These were not changed until early into the 280 SL run.

The tech manual also has a listing of the headlight covers, what they looked like and when they were changed.

The hubcaps should be separate trim rings and "dog dish" style covers over the center of the wheel. These carried over into the first few of the 280 SL.

Looking at your photos on bring a trailer, yes it appears the headlight doors and wheel covers were switched out with later 280sl at some point. Everything else looks correct. Not a big deal at all. Very nice car!
