Title: Crushable copper washer - Sump plug
Post by: alpina on April 06, 2017, 15:49:19
could someone tell me this correct size of the crushable copper washer for the sump drain plug.
I have the 17mm Hex nut plug.
The washer supplied with the filter is for the larger allen key style sump plug.  Obviously i would like to get one
before i start. I assume any copper washer of the correct size will work ?

You should have the correct crush washer for your large drain plug.  Only the latest version oil pans, or replacement pans,  used a smaller drain plug and seal. In this case the drain plug has a 13mm head.  Most importantly study the oil filter canister and seal information on this site to make sure all the rubber seals are in place inside the filter housing. This is critical since often times the upper filter seal (inside the housing) is missing. If this is the case your oil is not getting filtered!!

Hi,
the washer/seal sizes of the drain plug of the old an new oil pan are:
- old:   31 x 26 x 2 mm  (14 mm allen key, 17 mm hex nut)
- new: 16 x 12 x 2 mm  (13 mm hex nut) <-- same for oil cooler
           16 x 10 x 3 mm  (14mm hex nut) oil canister central plug outside
More important are the rubber seals in the oil canister: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Engine/Lubrication .

I understand all the other seals, and i have all these ready. The only washer i am missing is the copper washer for the
oil sump plug. From my understanding there are 3 styles of drain plug.

1) large plug which needs a 14mm Allen key.
2) 17mm Hex nut plug that is removed with 17mm spanner.
3) 13mm Hex nut plug used on later / replacement oil pans.

The washer that comes with the filter is for 1) the large plug 31mm dia.
I need the washer for 2).17mm hex nut. (my car is an early 1969 280SL) No 004973

so i still need the size the 17mm Hex nut plug washer.

I installed an O-ring instead of the copper washer. Done that for decades.

That is all good. But does anyone know the size of washer used with the 17mm hex nut
Drain plug?

The original oil pans will take either the 17mm hex head or the 14mm allen plug. Both of these interchange with each other and take the same oil pan and the same large copper crush seal. Only the replacement pans with the 13mm head plug uses the small copper seal.
