Title: Posting Photos larger than thumbnails
Post by: Valvechatter on March 20, 2017, 13:36:15
Can someone tell me how this is done? I know how to post thumbnails.
The links with help and videos to show how to do this are not working.
Thank you!

Lin,

First, there are two issues at play here: "posting" or attaching a photo, (a function of this forum) and second, converting a photo to the proper size (that's your responsibility).

To attach a photo, click attach at the bottom, click choose file, and browse to the location on your computer where the file is located. You'll note that the file limits and restrictions are quite clear here: 4 attachments per post, total size 8MB (8192KB), each file no larger than 4MB. That's pretty good and has been raised from years past.

Now if you take a high resolution photo these days, it is pretty typical that you'll get one larger than 4MB. Even my phone takes photos larger than that. There are many ways to reduce the size of JPGs, using a number of different software applications (photoshop, photoshop elements, iPhoto, etc.) Personally I use photoshop elements, but there are ways to do it directly on a phone with an app, and there are some free applications for your computer too.

Hi Lin,

Michael addressed your question well, I use the "image optimizer" it is a free program you can access or download to your system.

Check it out here ---> http://www.imageoptimizer.net/Pages/Home.aspx

With all due respect, neither of you have answered my question. I know how to do a photo attachment, and I know how to optimize the size of an image. What I am asking is how do I post a larger image than a thumbnail? Is there a way to post a photo in the body of the post rather than as an attachement?
Thank you, and I do appreciate your quick responses.

All the best.

You can use the [ img ][ /img ] functions of the editor (the leftbutton on the second row). Then insert the URL of the image between the two tags.

We don't like this because:

That's why we all live with the thumbnails.

thumbnail

Well Lin, we did try to help. Unfortunately you used the term "thumbnail" and that at last confused me somewhat. If you would have said something like "other then what is offered now to attach a photo" perhaps not in as many words :) then our reply would have been similar to what Peter posted.

When I joined I posted photos direct with tags from my photo album web site, Peter soon explained that eventually photos would be lost (if I delete them, or no longer maintain my membership with the photo album web site). So I stopped doing that. Also I've seen some folks here post photos that are too large and trust me it does mess up our page here, something you don't like to do I'm sure.

We hope somehow we did help out ... anyway that is the mission of everyone here ... helping one another.

Best,

Dieter

Thank you!
I belong to some other Forums that allow posting larger images directly in a post and that is why I asked. However, my query was not intended to be critical. Thanks for the responses. Thumbnails work just fine. I love this Forum and it's member's helpful attitudes.

This is an example of what I was trying to achieve. It is from the Alfa Forum.

Well, Lin...the only difference between what the Alfa forum shows, and what our forum shows, is that you are shown a thumbnail, but the actual picture in all its full glory is there if you click on it.

The thumbnail is a huge advantage, because not everyone is interested in seeing all the photos that are posted. This is evidenced by seeing the number of times the thread has been read versus how many times a photo has been viewed. That's useful information.

For example, as I write this note, in the Photos forum, Mike K has a topic of "Spring is here" and as of this moment, the topic has been read 261 times. Yet, the photos have been viewed just 46 and 55 times, respectively.

Rest assured you can post large photos, but only those forum members interested in seeing them in full resolution will view or download them. For many, the thumbnail is sufficient; I for one am pretty happy the way photos work here.

[n.b. my browser on my Mac shows thumbnails of the photos...and goodness knows, seeing each one in high resolution and full size would be challenging...)

Lin, as Michael says, all you have to do is click on the thumbnail to get the full picture, unless the picture you post is a thumbnail.

One thing I'm sure you will very much appreciate as you cruise through various threads looking for info is that unlike most other forums, this one is not cluttered up with all kinds of advertising.

Thanks, gentlemen.
I have no problem with the thumbnails. I was just trying to better explain (by showing an example) what I intended in my first post.  I am a happy camper. No worries and thank you!

Like this

But as Peter explained, we have no control of that photo and if the posting gets removed from the Alfa forum then it will also disappear from our Forum.

We ask members to avoid this as records are lost and postings can become meaningless.
