Title: Brake Lights
Post by: hosocat on February 13, 2017, 04:04:43
Hi,  New to forum.  I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me.  I have two brake light clusters that I'm trying to sell for my Mom.  MY dad passed away a while back, and I"m trying to sell them for my Mom.  My dad used to own either a 250 or 280 SL, we're not sure which.  These brake lights have been in his garage for 30 years.  They are used, but in fairly good condition.  But I don't know what kind of car they are meant to go on.  Can anyone tell me how I might go about identifying which model of MB these brake lights go on?  Thanks.

It is hard to tell unless there is a picture of the top part.  If the chrome is all straight with no cutout curve, then they are for the 250 early 280SL's.
If there is a cutout curve, then it belongs to a coupe/convertible 220SEb, 250SE, 280SE or 300SE.
If looking to sell, then put it in the "For Sale" section on the website.

Hi again Steve, as per our correspondence late last year, these lamps are for a w111 chassis (220 and 250se). Post a photo of the chrome bezel on the top side of the lamp so that others here can verify this and possibly list the applicable years.

Thanks Tyler.  I couldn't remember what you had told me earlier.  Hope your restoration is going well.

Okay.  I looked at top of lights and they both have the curved cutout, so I guess they are from 220se or 250se?  Is there any collector interest in parts for these cars?

Yes. How is the chrome, can you post a picture of the top since that part is the most visible anyway?

Sorry the pics aren't the best quality.  Here is a pic of the top of the chrome, which is the worst side, I guess from condensation forming on them and sitting there.

Would ebay be the best site to try and sell these?  I'm just trying to get the attention of enthusiasts who might be interested.

Yes, hosocat,

Try it. Ebay should be the best platform for selling taillights like these.
Chrome looks awful; lights are only good for parts or so.
Not much worth (I think)....

Nevertheless, good luck

Sorry for not replying before but as Achim points out the chrome is in a bad shape. Mine look the same and I was hoping that at least on top yours were better. However try eBay, prices are sky high and you will find a buyer that would rather have aged stop lights than broken or no stop lights at all.

Okay.  Thanks for the advice.
