Just discovered that my hardtop 4 digit number does not match my other body panels. This makes me question whether my car even came with a hardtop or if it was replaced for some reason. On my data card the second box in area 7 (Lacklerung OT) has three dashes (---) I've always thought that meant no second color, but now I'm not sure. Could it mean that there was no hardtop, so no need to specify a second color?
Was the hardtop an option or did all Pagodas come with hard tops?

The Hard Top was an option. Not all Pagoda's came with them. If a paint code is not called out in the Hard Top paint code box, it typically means there was no hard top delivered with the vehicle.

Typically, the hard top paint code is listed even if it's the same as body color. You can also check your data plate in the engine compartment as that would also list a hard top color.

When you follow the link that kampala provided, scroll down to the "Body and Paint Number" link. There is an explanation there about the data codes on the plate by the hood latch that indicate whether or not a hard top was fitted.

Found it: "If a W113 was delivered without the optional hardtop, i.e. as Roadster, there were dashes at the location for the color code for the hardtop."
Mystery solved, it's amazing what one can learn about their car after 27 years of ownership. Thanks to Jonny B and Kamala for their help.

You both have cars about the same age as mine, a 1970 280SL, built 10/69 for US delivery. I'm trying to build a correct toolkit and have found very confusing and contradictory information. Do either of you have an original kit that you could share the details of? I'm interested in what tools are included, the brand (or brands) and whether they are labeled MB, Mercedes, etc. Also want to confirm if the wrench sizes are 8/10, 11/14, 14/17 and 17/19 (Seems weird not to have a 13 or 15??) Pictures would be great if not too much trouble.
If I've missed this info somewhere on the on the forum, apologies.

As Alfred types, the wiki shows the proper tool kit. The first picture is what I have (different color bag though). The wiki spells out the brands, and they would vary. The sizes of the wrenches in my kit (all Dowidat brand) are - 8/10, 11/13, 14/17, 17/19. Which make sense to me, as you type, there is a 13 mm. I would guess there was variation in what was included, that is, the wrench sizes.
The slip joint pliers as specified in the wiki would have the MB star, and "No. 300" stamped. The pliers referred to in the wiki with the 129 part number are not correct for the Pagoda and are shorter than the proper ones.
The fuse pullers - a good accessory, were not part of the original tool kit, but were available as an extra item.

Well John, 15 is not needed because no fasteners on the cars have this size.
13, well that size came into being after 1965. At that time the DIN standard was changed. M8 bolts before change were 14mm key width, after change 13mm key width.
Thus, early tool kits have no 13mm wrench as there was no use for it. Later SL tool kits do certainly have a 13mm wrench.

For some time I have had some question about the authenticity of my kit. I cleaned it up a few days ago and looked closely at the contents. My question arose from the fact that my original kit was stolen during shipment to the US in 1970. My present kit as pictured here was purchased later in 1970 from the local MB dealer in Birmingham.
The slip joint pliers are made by Heyco Germany and are marked "N1303" or "N1307" (not clear). No Mercedes Benz star or marks are included.
The bag itself does not have a Mercedes stamp as shown in the technical manual. My open-end wrenches are Dowidat with Mercedes Benz marked on one side. Sizes 8/10, 11/13, 14/17, 17/19. Also marked DIN 895.
I do not have, and do not remember ever having had, a tire centering tool.
At the moment I have one screw driver shaft with different size Phillips drivers on the ends. it is marked "FF10D8GM" (possibly FF10D86M) also marked "W Germany." I am missing the screw driver Plastic handle and the other shaft with flat ends. I am searching my other tool boxes at various locations to see if I can turn up these missing parts. If I don't find I will be looking for replacements.
Any comments on my kit would be appreciated.

Ralph, far from all of the original bags had the "Star and M-B" print. So, no issue

If you read the "List of changes" that Jonny B publishes in the Pagoda Notes, you can note that the wheel centering pin tool was dropped autumn of 1968

The manufacturer´s name is "Felo" The handle and other flat end shaft are not so hard to find (at least in Europe)
The fuse pliers you have there are nice, as discussed, an extra item
PS. I feel we are drifting in reference to the subject of this thread; perhaps we should start a new one with relevant heading DS.
