Title: Trunk Lid Issue, Lock does not work
Post by: Rolf-Dieter ✝︎ on November 14, 2016, 16:56:08
One of our members has an issue with his trunk. He has problems at the moment to log into our site, we are trying to resolve it.

Meanwhile, this is what he posted to me in his e-mail:-

At a local car show I closed my trunk lid and now it will not open.  I have never had a problem with it before.  The lock appears to work, when I insert the key and turn it but it doesn't unlock the trunk.  I'm not sure if something on the lock has broken or if perhaps a plastic bag I had just put in the trunk has somehow gotten entangled in the lock.  I have looked at trying to get into the trunk through the back of the passenger compartment but I don't think that can be done.  The service manual does not appear to address the lock for the trunk, and I live about 150 miles from the nearest Mercedes dealer.   I am trying to find a locksmith to see if he can help me.  If anyone could provide some information I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jerry

He has a 1966 230sl

Have him pull the lock cylinder out all the way out to the stop.
Maybe the spring inside is weak and not pushing the lock out all the way.
Is he able to turn the key a full 180degree half circle?

are you saying that you can turn the key to unlock and then not able to push the button in? or are you able to push the button in but trunk wont open?

Try this. Turn the key to the unlocked poition and remove the key.  Firmly press button all the way in and hold pressure on the  button with your thumb.  With other hand, press down firmly on the trunk lid followed by a quick attempt to lift the lid with a gentle jerk.  If this fails, revert to locksmith.

Thanks Fellows!

I related your messages to Jerry by e-mail (looks like he still has problems logging in)

If the lock turns, most likely the cam on the end of the lock has come loose and pivoted out of range of the latch. A locksmith may not be able to help if this is the problem.
