Listed in San Diego CL. Says its in Reno. Either this is BS, or our cars are worth a lot less than we think or I'm buying another white 280 (I have a '71) "Better than factory" for $60k?
I have house about 20 miles from where the car's location is listed. I emailed to see what they would respond.
Am I missing something here?

The printed data card indicates chassis 004859. The stamped number on the door post data plate almost looks like 004359 or, maybe it is just not a clear picture.

Both data card and stamped numbers match if you blow up the photo. Not a bad deal.

FWIW, I've been emailing with the seller and I 100% believe he is legit. I've not seen the car in person, and the photos I've seen are not of sufficient resolution to make a bunch of determinations re: underling condition. I think when he said "better than factory" he was just referring to the paint, which does look very good and the shop he used near SF has a good reputation. Depending on the answers to a bunch of questions I sent, I may go look at a car. I believe this to be a standard 4 speed, no AC, but have other questions I'm waiting to hear about. If it is in otherwise good nick, and there aren't a bunch of issues (pix show sheepskin covers over the seats so I don't know the condition of the interior, not sure wheels are right, have not checked the build sheet to see if it the respray is original paint color, etc. it might be a decent buy.

Have a look before someone else snaps it up! (I coulda shoulda).

It looks very good, although the pics he chose to include don't include a side view.
The seller is probably pricing it competitively in order to get serious potential buyers interested quickly.
A few questions:
(1) Is it reasonable to assume that they wouldn't put such an exquisite paint job on the car if the underlying car wasn't a good one or am I naïve?
(2) I noticed the VIN plate says seating capacity "3". Is that the norm, or only those cars with the kinder seat?
(3) The CA vanity plate is "R LEE R". It looks to have been well loved so I'd have thought someone in the 113 community might recognize it or the owner.

My 1969 280SL Coupe/Roadster, no kinder seat says, "Seating Capacity - 2, Front - 2, Rear -0."

You made me look.
As with Ralph, my VIN plate says Seat Cap 2 Front 2, rear 0. Interesting also in that the plate is configured differently. Mine is a later car, 12730, and the Seat numbers are on the bottom right of the tag.

My VIN plate (007749) is configured exactly the same as the photo above from Craig's list.
