I've changed the alternator and the new one is a little different to the one that I took off (I think the replacement is 'more' correct for the car). It is not sitting well on the bracket and is causing a squeak (it's slightly twisted and not exactly in line with the water pump pully. Can anyone show me what the bracket attachment should look like? My cobbled set up can be seen in the picture ...

Hi Col,
The three pullies must line up 100% or as close as you can get it. Otherwise it will damage the fan belt, possibly damage the water pump and/or alternator bearings or, least of all, the belt will squeal lke a stuffed pig.
Although we know exactly what you are talking about, your picture does not show us the problem clearly. Try to shim it, fore or aft, with a washer or two. See if you could get us a better photo of the alt, the belt and the water pump, showing how they line up.

I think those early cars use a mounting kit similar to what 190SL's use. Steel bushings, rubber grommets and thin steel washers plus a ground cable.
If you don't have the right parts in there it won't hang properly. You should also check the bracket for wear at the mounting holes. If they're out of round it won't help at all.

It's pretty subtle and I don't think the photos do a good job of illustrating the problem... But these are the photos I have. I'll have a play tomorrow... I think the tensioner arm may be slightly in the wrong spot.

Sorted it today... I used a straight edge on the front of the pullies and added washers until it was perfect. Not an original set-up but works fine. I'll hunt down the correct parts at some point.
