Title: soft top frame problems
Post by: Benz Dr. on September 20, 2016, 16:39:12
Has anyone ever noticed how some soft top frames have a tendency to sag in the middle above the door glass? There's a hinge in the top frame in that area and it will tend to make the frame sit lower in the middle than at either end. When you roll the window up the glass will hit in the center before it goes tight into each corner and no amount of adjustment will fix it.
If you've encountered this problem, what did you do to fix it, or can it be fixed?

Hi Dan,
I believe Gernold told me once that when this happens you need to tighten the two wires that run front to back; tension adjustment is in the back.
Perhaps you should ask him for details when he comes back after Oct. 15.

Hello Dan,
Yes, quite often a problem on (heavily worn) ST frames. On mine as well.
This can somehow be corrected by bending the frame pieces and the hinge which run along the upper edges of the side window. There was a special factory tool - or a self-made one to fix this problem - if it isn't already too bad.
The 2 wires sewn into the top (which run inside of/and along the softtop canvas above the side window won't correct this adequately.

I also think Gernold is the solution here....

Best,
Achim
