Title: Exhaust Valve diamter 230 SL ??
Post by: Ben on November 10, 2004, 06:37:29
Anyone have the diameter of the exhaust valve on a 230SL, actually the stem size ?

In fact I need to ensure I have the right exhaust valve seals, so even the correct exhaust valve stem seal internal diameter ??

Regards,
Ben in Ireland.

Ben,
Don't have sizes to hand but here are Elring part #s for the stem seals which may help:

253.693 exhaust
022.233 inlet

174.750  engine set.

In my '66 databook, Klaus's figures are for an inlet valve.

Exhaust valve stem: 9.928....9.950

Valve guide inner dia:  10.000....10.015

You can replace the exhaust valve guides with 280SL sytle and then use 250/280 valves and hardware. Much easier to get parts and the seals won't pop off.

Ahhh yes good advice Dan.......I wish I'd thought of it when I did the head last year !

At the moment I am just trying to overcome the problem of a few seals popping off !

Thanks folks !
