Title: No paint runs
Post by: Sweden_Mike on August 24, 2016, 21:48:16
There are no paint runs on my trunk lid. However, there are two labels which i believe are original, although I can't be sure. Image attached. Car is a 1971 280.

I've heard a rumour saying the lid colour and the process changed so there are no paint runs on late cars. Can anyone shed light on this?

Adding pictures of paint runs and the red label from an early 250, delivered new in Italy. The label in is French, so of course the whole lid could be changed at some point in time.

Nevertheless, the colour is a bit more "blackish" and a tad more glossy. From what I can see in the pictures, the paint seems to have been running from the hinge side of the lid, "upwards".

The "Holy Grail" car over at Motoring Investments shows no paint runs and looks to be the same colour I have, with a slight mirror like effect in some angels. The paint also seems to be a lot thinner.

Have I missed something?
I only remember seeing and discussing paint runs on the inside of the hood/bonnet.
I don't remember any discussion and I have not seen any runs on the trunk/boot lid inside surface.
Were there paint runs from the factory on the inside of that lid too???

Thanks Hans.
You learn something new every day !
I'm guessing they improved the process by or before August '69.

The paint runs are quite visible in my two pictures. However, I'm still confused if this was changed in the process, and if so, when. The Holy Grail car certainly has no runs.

If they changed the process for the trunk, did they change it for the bonnet as well, so late cars have no runs?

The "Holy Grail" car over at Motoring Investments

For those of us who are not familiar with the car referred to, could you please elaborate.

Ralph,
Brian Peters (also a member here) runs http://motoringinvestments.com/.
Several years ago he purchase and sold a very original 1969 280SL that he called the "Holy Grail" because it had been so well preserved.
When his new site went up many complained that the old photos of the Holy Grail were no longer accessible. Thus, he made the old site available again:
http://historic.motoringinvestments.com/MainPage.htm
Select "Mercedes" and then scroll down about seven cars and take a look.

Thanks Mike & Alfred.  I had a quick look at the pictures on the old site and I will go back and review in detail when I have time.
