How do I remove window spring? Window is fully retracted but spring has a lot of tension

I've done this auccessfully by holding the end tightly with pliers (I think vicegrips) and using some muscle stretching the spring enough to get it past the catch and off.

Is the window lifter still in the door?
It is easier to remove the spring when the lifter is out.

I've used sheet rock screws to safely remove the springs on my soft top frame. basically screw them in to each thread section until spring expands then it should be easier to remove it. you may need 10 or 20 screws to stretch it.
