Title: '69 280SL Up for Auction this Saturday in New Orleans
Post by: mario on July 06, 2016, 15:21:59
So I completely stumbled across this advertisement this morning and it caught me by surprise because the auction is being held about a mile from my house this Saturday. This is a '69 Pagoda in Ivory with 32,500 miles and auto gear box.  It is a one owner with the documentation to prove it.  Purchased here in New Orleans in 1969.  Pics of the Bill of Sale, and original data card are on the link.

The Auction House is really playing up the ownership provenance because the owner is a moderately famous local Burlesque dancer named Chris Owens (which explains the gold grill star and gold center grill bar).  I called the auction house to see if I could inspect the car prior to auction, however, they said I have to wait until Saturday. Unfortunately the auction interferes with my tee time.

I can't help but think this car may go for a very reasonable price.  You don't see any Pagodas around here and they are under appreciated in this part of the country.  The auction house gears itself towards muscle cars, so another reason I think the crowd at the auction will not appreciate this Pagoda.

I may head over to the auction after the golf round to see if I can catch the Pagoda come across the block.  Check out the pics on the link (not great images) any comments would be appreciated.  Try not to hurt your eyes on the gold grill accents.

Will be most interested to see what this one goes for. Hope you are able to get there to see it in the metal. I am most curious how it presents.

I dont know, Looks to be a few more miles then stated. The acc pedal has quite a bit of wear on it. Not to mention the "Speedometer Repair" sticker next to the emissions label- Starts with "42". cant read the rest.

Quite a lot of surface rust in the engine bay - more than I have seen before (even more than my project car...which is saying something).
Obviously someone replaced the firewall padding.

Great catch. I didn't have the ability to zoom in on the photo of the odometer repair sticker until I opened it on my phone. Definitely starts with 42...

It looks like a decent car.  There are a few more wear items I can see.  The door pockets and head rests don't match the rest of the interior.  The heater levers have Dura levers installed. The rocker panels are too black.  Still if it is rust free underneath it will be a nice driver.

I think your tee time is less important than checking out what may be a great deal. ;D

Normally, I would completely agree!  But my Pagoda is coming back at the end of July after being gone 15 months for restoration.  I currently don't have the patience for another project, nor the energy to try and flip one right now! :/
