Sorry for the not-so-delicious headline, but when giving my new grease gun a go today, I came across these two nipples (see photo9). As my grease gun wouldn't fit on them, I unscrewed them to see why and a very foul smelling liquid - almost like burned tar - started dripping out, just a droplet or two from each.
So what could that be and why are these nipples a little bit larger than the other ones?

I believe they are for bleeding the brakes. You may be due for draining your brake system and replacing the fluid. Jon

There is something a bit funky going on there. There should only be one fitting, at the top of the brake caliper for bleeding the brakes (i just went out to check my car). There is a small rubber cap that goes over the bleeder to keep it clean.
Don't understand how someone could put/force grease there. Hope they are not grease zerks that have been inserted onto the brake caliper?!?

I am guessing that is a rebuilt brake caliper that has a bleeder on each end. Pretty odd find. If you didn't inject grease into them you should be fine as long as you tighten the fittings back up again.

Aftermarket calipers are sometimes made with a bleeder on top and bottom. That way they can be used on left or right side.
The company only has to make tooling for one part.

The thought crossed my mind, but they are regular grease nipples, only slightly larger - will order real ones and bleed the system with fresh fluid :-)
The car is an early 230 with the Girling system, these should be the correct ones http://www.sls-hh-shop.de/230-280SL-R113/42-Bremsen/42-a-Bremse-Raeder/Entluefterventil-230SL-vorn-Entluefterventil-230SL-vorn.html
