Title: Valuation question
Post by: Shvegel on June 05, 2016, 20:49:44
I have a US Spec 1970 280SL that is currently undergoing a full restoration.  When I began this process our cars were worth considerably less and I decided to make some small modifications to suit my taste namely European Headlights, deleting the side marker lights and using non-overider equipped bumpers and this is still the plan.  However I had another modification that I was planning and I am absolutely on the fence about how to proceed.  The car is currently an Automatc transmission car and the original plan was to make it a 5 speed car using Mark Bull's Getrag conversion kit.  I believe I already have all the parts including the correct overdrive gearbox so the question is how much do you think the value will be effected by equipping the car with a non-original 5 speed manual transmission as opposed to the factory Automatic gearbox?

Personally speaking I like all of your plans.  I've modified my 1970 USA spec car pretty heavily and I like the way it drives.  Won't know for sure until you sell it.  If I were a buyer I would pay more for the mods.

I agree with Jeff. To enjoy the car, if that is your plan ... You made all the right mods. If you plan to show the car you will loose some points on some of the changes you made. How much can only be answered by a knowlageable judge (perhaps one will reply to your post, we have several that are members here).

If you ever plan to sell, then you may have to wait for someone that likes all the mods you made.

As for value, it may affect it or not all depending on the indevidual and his/her knowlage.

If you keep the original gearbox and sundry items somewhere safe I don't think there would be any loss of value.
I'm with Jeff on all the other modifications.
