Title: Can Glass In Plastic Rear View Mirror (late 250 and all 280) Be Replaced
Post by: hlblanton on May 19, 2016, 23:24:05
The glass in my mirror (rear view, not side) has some dark spots, imperfections, etc. It seems like the earlier chrome model could be taken apart and the glass replaced. Is the later black plastic version a sealed unit where one has to replace the whole thing, or is there a way to replace/refurb the glass? Thanks.

HLB,

I could not find a way replace only the glass on these later mirrors without risking damage to the plastics.  Others may have been figured it out.

I opted to buy a used mirror with good glass and plastic part, and kept my stem.  You will find instructions by searching on how to swap stems and remove mirror from car.  Here's my post when I did this:

Hi,
you has to heat up the plastic, e.g. with hot water than you can remove the glass carefully. Push the glass to one side and lever it opposit out.
