Title: Finish colour of top casting on 4 speed transmission
Post by: gtait on April 15, 2016, 18:10:21
I am painting my engine and bracket etc.  and wondering what is the OEM finish for the top casting on the 4 speed standard transmission. Most of whatever was on it has worn off, but it does look to have reminits of a gold or brass colour.  Just wanting to do it correctly and am looking for advice.

Thank you

Gil

The top of a standard trans is made of aluminium. This will darken over time and turn black. If you are unable to clean it I suppose you could use aluminium colored paint.

The box is green. I use etching primer which is very close to the original color and it may in fact have been primer that was used when the trans was made.

Thank you.  I will clean and leave raw.   I have learned a ton from all your posts.

This is the color of Ditzler DP40 epoxy primer. I wet it down to show the true color.  Gloss is satin when new.

Thanks for the help.  The body of my transmission is actually in remarkable shape and it the green paint is in great condition. Only the top casting shows a little oxidation.

Having a great time bring my 230 back to life. It has not been on the road since 1981. This site is amazing.
