Title: Distributor shims and fiber washer??
Post by: erickmarciano on April 03, 2016, 20:29:47
Hi guys
Taking apart my distributor there is a fiber washer that fell apart. Can I replace it with a regular one?
Where should I add a shim to reduce up down play ? Where the red plyers are or my blue glove?
Thanks

You need to retain the fiber washer as it absorbs and holds on to oil. Get ahold of Glen Beck. He should be able to help you out with a new washer and other needed parts.

There are actually two washers that go on the main shaft. One goes at the top below the two shims and the other goes above all of the shims at the drive collar. Shims come in several different thicknesses and are used to remove any end play. All of these parts, and more, come in a rebuild kit which is now over $150.00 USD.

I used to do a lot of distributor rebuilds but the cost of the rebuild kits and everyone going to electronic ignition kind of made it pointless......

My bottom fiber washer was missing and has very little oil in it. Can I just replace it with a regular distributor washer?
Thanks

I think so, as long as you have some the right thickness.
