Title: Yves Saint Laurent video commercial, "L'Homme"
Post by: pj on March 23, 2016, 04:29:35
This is about as classy as it gets

I wonder when this was made.
Are Pagodas rising to have the cachet of the 300SL for those who don't want to come across as pretentious by actually showing a 300SL?

Great video Peter, thanks for posting.  Love the rolling 180 degree turn.

How come that never happens to me when I leave my door unlocked and open?   Oh wait, I already have the girl.  :D ;D

Yes great video Peter, thanks for sharing .... I had this kind of following when I drove my Pontiac Firebird many many years ago in good old Montreal before Bill 101 hehehe ... Oh the memories of it all :)

Let's see ... I have the beautiful girl, the car, and the tattoos. But I no longer have that young age ... Oh well, three out of four ain't bad. Nice video.

That is some pretty good driving.  I have tried this directional maneuver a couple times and found that I had to have the seat very far forward as my arms were not long enough to reach for the parking brake and then push the button to disengage it once I was done my 180.

The guy in the video does it picture perfect - stepped on the brakes to lift the rear and once the back end was up in the air he twisted the steering wheel, cranked on the parking brake and slid the rear end out.  It doesn't show it but I am assuming the car stopped and through the magic of cinematography it appears that he was able to keep going to get back to his wallet.

I got pretty good at doing this in my '86 Honda Accord but it was an automatic with the parking brake much closer and way easier to load and release.  Both times I tried this in the Pagoda it was an epic fail.

As good as it gets - pure class - 280SL without headrests - my personal preference.

The spinout brought back some frightful memories to my recent escapade -  thankfully I can laugh about it now.

Nice video. Reminded me of myself when I was younger. Ha Ha. No 180's in my Pagoda but I did do a 360 once in my brother's '63 Chevy impala. Hope he doesn't have access to this forum :)

Hey Rob, me too. I was really happy when I picked up my car and saw that it didn't have the headrests (the salesman told me it probably would). I know it would be much safer but liked the clean look with out them. Hated the reflectors but got used to them.

Just weird that I did a 180 (unintentionally) in my car this past week. Thinking about it I believe the LSD was main the main culprit along with hardening tyres. (my friends say it was user error ). I didn't back off the gas when I felt wheel spin and didn't factor that the LSD would kick in.

John - I'm still trying to put myself in your shoes as a young guy setting eyes on your car for the first time. I think if I did purchase a car with headrests I would remove them when it was time to re-trim the seats. You did well with yours - no headrests, 4 speed, lovely colour, and no bumper over-riders I see. Did you get the hard pockets on the door trim?

Hello Rob, the car has the soft door pockets :(. I always thought the interior of my 250SL was much nicer. it was identical in color but the MBTex just looked better and the hard door pockets along with other features (such as the chrome horn ring) just seemed a bit more "classy". Not sure how well they would have held up for 48 years but I sure can't fault the MBTex in my car now. Looks good as new which is really incredible. As for the door pockets, the elastic gave way long ago and they sag a bit now. Since mine was a very early '69 model, Bumper over riders were not a standard item and came later which I was thankful for.

When I first read your post LSD (Limited Slip Deferential) wasn't the first thing that came to mind for that acronym ;D

Hah John! - you must have been a wild child! Yes that form of LSD might have caused quite a spinout alight......but I wouldn't know for sure. As for me - I've done a lot of crazy things in my life but I'm a clean skin (no ink) and have never even smoked a cigarette let alone other substance. (items of extreme beauty are my only vice......which can be extremely costly).
....but I do have the girl  ;)....and the car(s) ;D

In fact, it was the said girl (wife#2) who introduced me to the car.....hence, I think she would let me buy as many as I can afford but she is starting to nag me about selling the other marques.

Wild Child? Nope, not me. 8) I was a pretty "Straight Arrow" guy, pocket protector and all. the late 60's early 70s were an "Interesting" time for sure but I got through it somehow. I worked for an Aerospace company and my job required a security clearance so anything worse then a cigarette was pretty much a big no no. No cigarettes for me either which I am thankful for now.
I had the car for a few years before I met my wife and it was love at first sight, with the car that is :) I think the SL sealed the deal and we are coming up our 40th anniversary this year. We still enjoy those drives today in our old "Time Machine"

Clearly John, you fell upon a winning formula. No wonder you are going strong after 40 years - your wife is actually your mistress! She wasn't your first love remember. ;)

I've thought about getting a mistress..........

She would need to be in her mid 50's and her name would have to be Shelley.

( Ah......... she just walked in and saw this........... and then she patted me on the head )

                                ( why do I feel like I'm three years old?  :-[ )

CS, I sure wouldn't take credit for the video. Just glad I wasn't repeating a post from months or even years ago. That's so embarrassing!

This thread sure loosed some history! Nice to see there are others who don't drink coffee or smoke or have tattooes :-)

Amazing video. I loved the aerial view of the car doing a 180 among other things of course! :)
