Title: Brake Shoe Separation. ...I'm glad we have this site!
Post by: vande17941 on March 06, 2016, 00:44:57
After driving the 230sl on a road trip for about 150mi at autobahn speeds and then on some nice mountain twisties......got about 2 miles from home  and heard a huge "clunk" as if the drive train was about to fall out of the car.

I got on this site, searched for "clunk" and then took off the brake drums...20min and the problem was found. How great is this site and the people on it? Great.

Now....who has the hot recommendation on where to get some new shoes. Preferably someplace where I could get a new/rebuilt set and send these back as cores. I'm in California...though, I doubt that matters since everything is shipped nowadays.

Any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Call some truck (as in 18 wheeler type truck) service depots. Trucks - at least in Europe - re-line drum brakes all the time and it's likely to be cheaper than sending to some 'classic car specialist' who will probably send them to the same place as the truck guys anyway!

Hi
Check K&K Mfg.  I believe they can re line them for you.

I had mine relined a few years ago and it was $132.  The company that did this for me was relining brakes for commercial vehicles in Pa.  You should be able to find one locally to you.  The classic center wanted $1000 for them new...

Looks like K&K shows them on their site, as mentioned earlier.

I wonder if I need to send them mine first, or if they send me a re-lined set, and THEN I send them back my cores. I don't really want to have to wait with the car sitting around.

I usually keep a relined set in stock. I use a better lining than stock with metalic fibers so they bite in better. I think the 230 uses a brake shoe that starts with a 110 part number. Check yours so I can be sure about the right ones.

After this brake shoe friction lining material separation, the inside of the brake drums are scored. Is there a minimum brake drum thickness that I need to be concerned about? And how is it measured ? Because these drums are definitely going to need to be machined on a lathe. Any info would be helpful. Thank you
