There are three marks that we often refer to on 113 engines. Top dead center on the crank shaft, the notch on the cam shaft, and the small mark on the ignition distributor housing.

All of these marks must be lined up in order for the engine to be in time and then start. First thing is to time the cam shaft to the the crank shaft at TDC. Once you have that then you can time the distributor to the other two.

Normally, I encourage people to try things and learn as they go. :) This may not be something you should try if you don't have the basic skills. I say this as someone who was more or less self taught over a period of many years - one never stops learning or making mistakes for that matter. The cost of learning can be far higher than having someone do it for you if you miss something. However, if you're handy around engines then we can walk you through it. It's not impossible but it's not easy either.

Thank you. I managed to do it. The worst part is that i can not find many parts for the engine. Car was abandoned for 17 years and many parts was to rusty to recover. I did realize engine is not original from that chasis and that makes it mor complicated for me to find the parts.

Danut, First things first. You need to figure out what engine you have there. It will be essential when you go to order parts, assemble it, and make adjustments. Look for the numbers stamped in the block just above the oil filter housing and on the head just above that. Post those numbers back here so we all know what to advise.  ;)

Uh, that's not a fuel injected engine.

Your right on that one Dan.  That block has no place for an injection pump!

Number on engine is 130 920-10-029855 and on the paper work it says it should be 130 093-10-005963. Definitely not the original engine and yes its twin carb not injection, that makes things more complicated for me.  :(

Try to source a correct injection engine, simplifies things and certainly will enhance the value of the car. Several model sedan/coupe engines of the period will substitute and if you search around a bit should not be too expensive (less than GBP 1,000 for a running engine from a parts car). Good luck,

thank you for the advice. I did try to find one before but no succes. Just have to rebuild the carb and engine done. Most parts i brought from www.sls-hh-shop.de.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but you are absolutely crazy to be re-building the incorrect engine for that car. A complete 280 engine should not be difficult to find even if it will be more than £1000 as Cees suggests.

Totally agree with Stick, an incorrect engine in the car will take off thousands of dollars in value as well as making it difficult to set up properly in future.

Or, I suppose you could use it as is and find a sedan SE engine ( they're the same as an SL anyway ) and get that ready for install later on. Aside from all the work to fashion the wrong engine in there the change back to original shouldn't be too bad.
