Title: In need of a 280sl dip stick tube.
Post by: Autobob on December 01, 2015, 21:21:00
Continuing on my 1971 280sl project, I am missing the engine oil dipstick tube does anyone have a spare to sell? I have checked with MB Classic and have ordered a new stick but they have no tubes or tube to pan seals. Thank you, Bob

Thought I did but no luck.  I have the early 280 stick and tube with the long handle on the stick.

The "Middle" on Joe's post:  http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=23304.0

If you are not worried about originality I am sure it would work just fine.

Do you know how long it is. I may have it, just want to be sure of the length.

Mine is 16" from the bump at the oil pan end to the top.  I'll shoot a pic later and post it.

I couldn't get a good shot of the later dipstick tube but it is about 16" from top to the bump where it meets the upper oil pan and it has about a 25 degree bend in the middle.  Again the mid year dipstick and tube should work if you get into a bind but it isn't "correct" for your car.  I'll send you the mid year tube and stick as a freebie if it helps you out...if I can get it out of the upper oil pan.

First I must say I am embarrassed that I have not noticed the replies to my thread. I thought I would receive an email when someone replied and hence thought no one did.  No doubt there is a setting I need to check when making a post.
Shvegel that would have been great as originality is not this cars forte. This 71’ 280sl was a barn find mix of SL and SE engine parts with missing parts. On the dipstick I ended up with a new long tube and a new middle short dipstick as in Joe’s photo. I have on the way a new long dipstick so hopefully it will be resolved. Again everyone that replied, Shvegel, Cabrioletturbo, ja17 Joe, Benz DR, thank you, I will improve. Bob
