Title: Aluminium Sump - Bolts Torque Settings (?)

I am just closing up the bottom end of my 230SL engine and now realise I don't know what the allen bolts torque should be (ali sump to block). Ive looked at the BBB plus searched the forums. The closest I can find is 0.8MKG for the lower oil pan bolts.. the bolts that hold the tin pan onto the ali sump casting. I'd have thought these bolts would be a lower torque than the sump bolts that go into the cast iron block. Can anyone give me a pointer.. apols if its on the site somewhere and Ive missed it!  ???

The "Technical Data Passenger Cars" booklet has the following:

Mounting screws for intermediate flange at cylinder crankcase - 5 mkp X 7.233 = 36 ft-lbs

I have never seen a 6mm cap screw with a torque higher than 13 ft-lbs. A 6mm 8.8 hardness bolt is around 100 in-lbs (7-8 ft-lbs or 10 NM).

The "Technical Data Passenger Cars" booklet has the following:

Mounting screws for intermediate flange at cylinder crankcase - 5 mkp X 7.233 = 36 ft-lbs

 That sounds a bit high for 6mm screws but maybe it's OK. Is the intermediate flange the oil pan or the sub pan, or, is it something else? I ask because MB often calls things by odd names.

Good questions, but I have no picture or reference diagram to indicate what the data book meant by "intermediate flange" that is why I typed it in so others would be able to translate.

This is the vertical alloy part behind the engine block, that the gear box bell housing bolts onto.

The M6 Allen screws around the lower engine block, that attach the long alloy oil pan, are specified to 1,3 kpm, i.e. 13Nm
The M6 Allen screws around the lower, sheet metal oil pan are specified to 1,1 kpm, i.e. 11Nm

Thanks guys.. Interesting discussion. I'll go with the figures Hans has provided. I can get on with closing up the bottom end.. another step closer to a compete engine.

I'll say again.. the cumulative level high of knowledge on this site is very refreshing. Its also good to know there are other like-minded Pagoda'ists out there that have worn the T shirt (so to speak)!.
