Title: adjusting trans neutral switch
Post by: piddler on August 22, 2015, 00:11:48
I replaced the cable from the transmission to the trans neutral/backup light switches. I checked the switch without the cable installed to be sure that it worked properly. Now I cannot get the cable adjusted to operate the switch properly. I am checking with ohm meter and the circuit stays closed in park, reverse and neutral now. I have adjusted the cable to just about every position and have a lot of results. None of which have been correct.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance, Pete

Not sure I understand.  You should have a closed circuit to the starter (terminal 50, purple wire I think) in P and N, and to the backup lights in R.  Is this what you are seeing?

I have also had trouble with this adjustment.  I have found the best starting point to be putting the trans in N, putting the switch in the N position, and adjusting the cable to that length.

Thanks. You are correct about the closed circuit on the switch. I hope to get back to the car today. I will follow your advice on the adjustment.

I have worked mainly American and British cars and I must say that this Mercedes has been a challenge.

Thanks for the tip. The simple things in life can bring joy, or frustration.

Be certain to clean and  lube the pivot at the cable end/transmission connection or the cable end will bind causing the cable to flex and throw the adjustment off.
