In the last month or two I have been batting less than 50% when ordering parts based upon just the year and model number. Where can I get a list of the correct part numbers for my 68 280? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you can find a dealer parts book it has part numbers and pictures. It is the large book similar to the glove box book. They show up on ebay sometimes.

John,
look for spare parts lists that have numbers like "10 XXX", NOT "12 XXX".

Have you tried using EPC?

Is that the startekinfo.com web site? My dealer just told me about that yesterday. Said I can get the same parts diagrams that he can. I am going to try that now.
Thanks!

Is the 12 for a different chassis style?

Definitely not. Startekinfo is Mercedes subscription service for newer cars and it costs money. Try this link:

and click subscribe.

What Alfred is referring to is the number sequence on the parts books. The small parts books, the ones that came with the cars, are numbered starting with 12, then the sequence of the books. These were intended for the owner to be able to find the part, then using the group and table communicate what was needed to the dealer. The books starting with 10 are the dealer parts books with the full breakdown of the part numbers.
PS - check out the article in the upcoming PWorld for further details. The final proofing is complete and is at the printer. It should be out before the end of the month.

That's not what Alfred is saying. There are two types of parts books. There is a little one that comes with the car and is in the glove compartment and is the same size as the owner's manual. It has lots of diagrams but it does not have part numbers. The NUMBER on that book will begin with "12". Then there is the BIG dealer parts book. It has similar diagrams, more of them, and pages and pages showing the part number of every single part.. The NUMBER on that book will begin with "10". See attached pictures.

...and inside the big book (first two pics) and the little book (third pic)

Ok thanks JohnnyB and everyone else. That makes sense. I didn't get the 10 vs 12 at first, but I have been a little slow lately!
