Title: 280SL late head bolts
Post by: Benz Dr. on May 29, 2015, 16:40:04
Does anyone happen to know the PN for the late style head bolts on a 280SL? They measure 115 mm and 145 mm respectively, which is 5 mm longer than the earlier version. I would also be interested in a set if anyone has any spares.

Dan,

I have a Aug 1970 280-SL with engine #130983-10-007297 and the head bolts are 140mm (000912-012039) and 105mm (000912-012029). When I look at the EPC it states that these numbers were used until the end of the 113 production.

The BBB states that the head bolts were made longer by 5mm up to 115 and 145mm.  Which one is correct?

The late head bolt numbers are:

 000912 - 012040 for the lomg bolts ( 145 mm )
 000912 - 012032 for the short bolts  ( 115 mm )

This sls picture explains all:

Seems like the longer bolts were used on 130.980 engines after 12 069853

Mine are definitely the shorter bolts as I currently have the engine apart and measured them before my first response.

PN 000912 - 012040  has been subbed over to 615-990-03-12 which has a 12 point head probably used on a diesel. It is the right lenght though.

I realize this is probably a silly question but will the block accept the longer head bolts?
