Title: Pistons
Post by: AndersO on May 27, 2015, 11:59:12
Hi,
I am trying to restore a 280SL block ( engine number 130 983 12 - 014205) which supposedly comes from the US. The restoration was started by someone unknown, the bore is now 87.50 mm and good, and I need to find pistons that fit.
Does anyone know if I can use the EU type pistons with a compression height of 48.6 mm and the length of 80.6 mm, instead of what I believe to be the MB specs with compression height 47.9 mm?
Many thanks,
Anders in Sweden

Thanks Naj,
These are the pistons I want to buy. The question is if they will work in the US Automatic engine?

Hi, AndersO,

According to my interpretation of the EPC, Both Euro and  US engines after engine # 12 007230 use the same pistons.
The standard piston part # is 130 030 8917.
I could not find the part #s for the oversize pistons.

Hope this helps

That is reassuring.
I have now ordered and hope for the best.
Many thanks,

Pistons are now in place, and although the engine is far from complete, they seem to fit very well.

I've found that over size pistons are a bit shorter so that you can deck the top of the block which is usually needed anyway.
