Title: 230SL Oil pan and rear main seal issue. Getting desperate.

Hello everyone.
I have one other post about the 230SL I am rebuilding the engine for but I have hit a wall on the rear seal.

The groove in the pan that the rear crankshaft seal rests in is too narrow and does not match the block. The MB rope-type rear seal fits great in the block, but the groove in the pan only measures .224" (about 5.7mm.) It is not nearly as wide or as deep as the one in the block. I know this engine has lost a rod before because the rods are not from a 230SL and I then suspect that when it failed the pan got ventilated and replaced.

Where could this pan be from? When I look for rear seal part numbers for all sorts of this era car, they all come up with the same part number I have, and it is half right.

The oil pan which is from an older car than yours probably has the older narrow type seal. This seal is available - I usually keep a couple in stock.
