Think my coil is on the way out. Car starts fine, runs for 20 mins or so. Dies. Won't restart. Zero firing . Leave ten mins, start fine. 20 mins later exact same thing. Suspect the coil. It has a orange top Bosch at the moment.
What coil do I need please?
-
Probably one that will work :D :D :D
Sorry Paul, could not resist that
You havent looked in the Tech Manual

Hi, Paul,
Your problem reminds me of the trouble I had with my 230 SL when I first bought it.
The fuel return line had rusted from the inside and pushed all the debris into the tank and blocked the port on the flower pot.
The tank had to be cut open and cleaned out to cure the problem.
If its the coil, you need the Bosch one with the red label (MB 000 158 2703 Bosch 0 221 119 030) with a matching 1.8 ohm ballast resistor with a red band( MB 000 158 1745 Bosch 0 227 901 014).

Great thanks. Thought I would start with the coil as it's an easy fix and low cost item. My one looks like the oridiginal with a 0.9 ballast resister, so ok to just replace the coil and put a new 1.8 resister instead ?

Hi Naj.My car has a 0.9 ballast resistor and an orange Bosch coil ,starts and runs fine
does that set up sound ok to you ???.Cheers .Mike Rut. Did you hear the sad news Mike Powell died today
he will be greatly missed
-
Hi, Mike,
Thanks for letting me know about Mike Powell.
He was a good friend and will certainly be missed.
If the body of your coil is black, its the original set-up.
Amazing how well these still work good after 50 years of service!

Hi Naj the coil body is orange would this be compatible with my 0.9 ballast resister
Many thanks .Mike.

Hi, Mike,
Are there any labels on it?
If not, you need to find the Bosch part # on the bottom of the coil.
Here's something useful to do over the weekend. ::)

Naj. I have checked the coil and ballast resistor, the coil has yellow label with T.K.12.A3 super coil. Use only with
1.8 ballast resister. The ballast resister has Beru wz 09-2 and 0.9. (the wrong one) ? how would this affect the running
or starting.Should I order a 1.8 ohm resister, should it make a difference.Cheers. Mike.

Hi, Mike,
I think you should change the ballast resistor to 1.8 ohm.
This is to protect the coil from over heating

I can check next week in my car (230 sl ,66). I had a coil problem as well, last year. I changed the coil and resistor. No problems since (2500 km). But the car is not here, so I will look later what Bosch- Beru combination I installed.

Thanks I will order a new 1.8 ohm ballast resistor ;D
